WHAT IS HAWAIIAN CANOE (WA’A) RACING?
In Hawaii, outrigger canoeing isn’t just a sport—it’s a cultural cornerstone deeply rooted in the Hawai’i history and reverence for the ocean. Dating back to around 200 AD, Hawaiian Outrigger Canoes played a crucial role in early Hawaiian voyages. These canoes were vital for transporting essential supplies and settlers, guided by the natural cues of migrating birds that led them to discover the Hawaiian Islands.
Hei hei Wa’a or canoe racing emerged as a distinct Hawaiian sport, evolving alongside the islands’ indigenous culture. Despite its significance, the sport of canoe racing faced challenges during Hawaii’s history of cultural transformation. Missionaries arriving in the islands disapproved of traditional practices like canoe racing which sometimes included betting on race outcomes. This disapproval eventually led Queen Ka’ahumanu to ban these activities under European influence.
Today, thankfully Wa’a Culture and Paddling not only preserves Hawaiian heritage but also serves as the official team sport of Hawaii, embodying a profound connection between the people and the sea. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Hawaiian seafaring culture and the spirit of aloha that continues to thrive through the sport.
About Hawaiian Canoe Club
Founded sixty years ago by John and Kealoha Lake, the Hawaiian Canoe Club was established to preserve and promote outrigger canoe paddling while instilling traditional Hawaiian values. Emphasizing respect for elders, nurturing youth, and fostering family bonds (‘ohana), the club has expanded its youth programs. Today, these include paddling trips to Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, and Moloka’i, along with paddle making workshops that teach values like lokahi, emphasizing unity. Collaborations with nonprofits enhance educational and recreational offerings at their hale, fostering personal growth, character development, and fitness.
With a vision to be a globally recognized canoe ‘ohana, the club is known world over for it’s excellence in competition, cultural programs, and leadership development.
